RCPS Press Report 28th September 2017

At our first meeting back at The Arches, Holy Trinity Church in Ripon, 18th September it was a pleasure to see faces familiar and new, including new members and a host of visitors for the evening. Introductions were made over tea, coffee, and cake.

The evening was an opportunity to review the Annual Exhibition which had been held on the 2nd of September and which had been a huge success, enjoying a record number of visitors over the day. Digital images from the Exhibition were shown over the break times.

Members had also been invited to show their images taken over the summer close-season. This proved very enjoyable and it was really gratifying to see those images presented by new members, especially the younger ones. Alistair Peterson gave feedback on the Society’s summer programme of events which, with his sub-committee, he had arranged on behalf of members and any other people interested. Many of the images on show were from the events and visits: the North Yorkshire Moors and Coast, Ripon Races, workshops at The Arches and Masham Steam Rally. Members were invited to consider events for the summer programme at the end of this season.

Vice president Emma Littlefair gave thanks to the outgoing Committee, many of whom had come to the end of their term of office and to the outgoing Exhibition sub-committee, including Carol Morrison and Derek Hodson who have given much time and effort into organising the exhibition over the last many years. Emma welcomed the incoming committees.

On our second evening of the season,  the subject was competitions and members were treated to a workshop covering digital image sizing, how to mount prints professionally and to an excellent presentation by Richard Littlefair on the expectations of judges when scrutinising our images in competitions. Members were tasked with making their own judgments, critiquing a number of prints brought along for the exercise. It’s never as easy as you think!

Next week, we will be taking our cameras out and about in Ripon (weather permitting) to have a go at some night-time shots and long exposures with light painting. We hope to see you there.
